MARCH 6TH, 2020

JHENE AIKO — “CHILOMBO”

Jhene Aiko has been a driving force for the change in R&B during the last decade. Her sound was unique and changed the way a whole genre sounded as well. It is her own interpretation of a sound famed by Erykah Badu, and those before Jhene’s time but it’s a new sound nonetheless. People might think that Jhene has simply been around for 10 or so years with 5/6 projects but that is not the case. Since the age of 14 in 2002 Jhene has released music or in some way created music. That is a feat that not everyone can say, so even if you do not like this project respect the longevity of the artist.

JADAKISS — “IGNATIUS”

Speaking of early 2000’s Jadakiss has been around longer than that. To be exact the veteran MC has been rapping since 1994 where he was a part of the LOX and took the east coast by storm. He would of course be a part of the infamous Ruff Ryders and be associated with Styles P due to the Yonkers connection, however he was always a star in his own right. Along with having multiple classics under his belt Jadakiss is known as one of the best lyricists and wordsmiths the game has seen.

MEGAN THEE STALLION — “SUAGA”

This project came with a lot of controversy surrounding it. As Megan continues to shoot up the charts and maintains her status as an amazing MC, all that comes with trouble as well. Nonetheless, she is still as popular as ever and even has a new challenge because of this project. It is not as good as her Mixtape last year but as she is still a relatively new artist and is young she has a lot of time left in the industry.

LIL UZI VERT — “ETERNAL ATAKE”

Uzi was one of the most anticipated releases of not only 2020 but for the past 3 years since his previous album dropped. Fans have waited for this one and it finally arrived, a week early might I add. Uzi was in a similar situation to Megan’s as he was dealing with label issues and execs too which delayed his project, and at one point made him not want to release music. The wait is officially over and people can rejoice as they listen to their favorite artist.

MARCH 13TH, 2020

RICH THE KID- “BOSS MAN”

Rich The Kid has been seen less in the spotlight. I don’t really have too much to say as I am not an avid listener of Rich the Kid but I am happy he is still releasing music as he is on his third album.

JAY ELECTRONICA — “A WRITTEN TESTIMONY”

When we talk about anticipated releases Jay Electronica has to be in this list. Somewhere between Lil Uzi and Dr. Dre’s Detox lies Jay Elec. Over a decade ago he drop a track that had so much acclaim it almost created a legend with one well-known track. For so long an album was teased but never showed up and so when he announced one for this year people were very skeptical if he would actually do it but he finally did and he did so with help from HOV. All that anticipation has made many ready for nothing less than immaculate rapping and great production.

MARH 20TH, 2020

Much can be said about the Weeknd but he has crushed the last decade. Since debuting with multiple mixtapes and songs that were drug infused, he has continued his trajectory and hasn’t stopped. His sound changed but he did not which is why he has been able to keep his core fan base along with adding more. Although many are mad The Weeknd has strayed away from his R&B sound we cannot deny his impact and how big of a star he has become.

MARCH 27TH, 2020

PARTYNEXTDOOR — “PARTYMOBILE”

ParyNextDoor is a peculiar case, he has been so quiet yet so prominent in many artists ability to make hits. He is the Quentin Miller that has been able to stick around and make a name for himself. Party and The Weeknd have been compared to each other multiple times and this time around we get to see them go head to head and debate which project is better than the other. Party too has strayed away from his signature sound which has thrown off some people, bu we hope his album is still good.

JOYNER LUCAS — “ADHD”

Joyner Lucas is an amazing rapper and can rap faster than many artists out today. His content as well is always creating buzz or intrigue because he always has a message. However, it seems to be a formulaic way to make people listen to his songs and watch the music videos as well. He is talented but there are questions as to him using the same style of record to get over with the crowd.

GIVEON — “TAKE TIME”

Giveon is a relatively newer aris that has gained popularity in the last year or so. His voice is so unique you know who it is as soon as he sings a note. There are not many baritone singers out there anymore so he is able to stand out more. He is getting more and more recognition, so much so that he is featured on one of Drake’s newest songs, “Chicago Freestyle”. Hopefully Giveon can make a bigger name for himself and by next year have a huge following.

LOOSIES AND LOST TRACKS

TORY LANEZ — “TRUST REMIX, W, DO THE MOST”

Since, dropping Chixtape 5 Tory Lanez hasn’t even taken a break or rested it seems. He’s been on tour which I was fortunate enough to go on and he did an amazing job as well. Chixtape 5 was a highly anticipated project but soon after he dropped it he said The New Toronto 3 is the works and has been for so long. Since then he has not only posted videos of him in the studio but he has been releasing even more music in the process. In March he released a remix of Buju Banton’s “Trust”, “W” which will be on TNT3, and
Do the Most” which will also probably be on the new project. Along with that he somehow found a way to break IG’s streaming record with having 300K people tune in to his Quarantine Radio.

DRAKE — “WHEN TO SAY, & CHICAGO FREESTYLE”

Drake kicked off the month of March with two new singles, he has been somewhat quiet as usual besides his interview with Rap Radar. There was video of Drake that surfaced with him in Marcy projects where Jay-Z is from and the internet took it and ran with it speculating what was coming. Well on the 1st of the month he dropped the tracks he was working on in anticipation for his new album which is scheduled to come this year.

The African Giant himself blessed us with a new track titled “Odogwu” which means leader or victor. It seems as if all Burna Boy does is record music and tour as a video of him freestyling on IG live was taken and recorded with talk that he is coming out with another album this year after dropping last year. It is safe to say he has become the king of Afo-Beats not Afro-beat which a lot of people get mixed up by. It’s safe to say that after that announcement I hit up my homie Benji and told him we need to be outside by the time this comes out.
