BIG K.R.I.T.

In a industry full of artists, some more talented than others its hard to keep your focus on every artist and to become fully submerged in their music as well. With 4–5 major hip hop releases every week it seem as if the market is saturated, but when you do your best to weed through the pool of musicians you find gems. Sometimes on purpose and sometimes you just stumble upon them. This artist has been a part of my music library for years now, the southern rapper known as BIG K.R.I.T. is one of the best that doesn’t get the appraisal he deserves.

BIG K.R.I.T. — LIVE FROM THE UNDERGROUND

During high-school there was a sort of transformation, not only for me but seemingly for my peers as well. Lyrics were in and important, this is the era where so called “mumble rap” was starting to bubble on the surface but had not reached its peak yet. Rappers with a dope ability to rap and content to go with it where in style and BIG K.R.I.T. was one of them and has been since. The first K.R.I.T. project I ever heard was “Live from Underground”, which came out in 2012 and since then I have been hooked on his music. Not only does he rap well, but he is versatile as he makes beats as well and produces his own music. The Memphis rapper has a sound that is soulful and can be very mellow, but still captivates the audience as well.

BIG K.R.I.T. — “THRICE X”

This is what we get once again with this surprise EP K.R.I.T. dropped on Friday. It is only three songs but all songs are amazing and has a meaning behind it, which seems to be a given but in this time of people not putting their all into every single song they create and throw aways, it puts into perspective just how different the times are. EP’s should be an artists best songs or effort and due to the lack of multiple songs it should be as perfect as possible because it can easily but overlooked or given poor reviews. In this three song project, it is 1. noticeable why the rapper named his project “Thrice” and 2. a sample of what is more to come in the future full-length album wise.

BIG K.R.I.T.

With “Higher” we get a mixture of topics, he speaks about black men dying in the streets, abuse of alcohol, and more all though many things are being touched upon, it flows so well that it is an eye opening track where you can look at your own life and reflect as well. “Glorious” is a look at his own career with people calling constantly and how he has dealt with people becoming vultures in the industry and how he’s getting through it all. Lastly “Look What I Got” is a song that shows us how accomplished the rapper is and everything he has achieved along the way. Although you can get through this project fairly quickly, it is important to listen and pay close attention to his delivery and of course his message as he always over delivers.

STANDOUT TRACKS
